Allianz Future Income: Endowment Campaign

The brief was deceptively simple: show a life, fully lived. One man. One story. From the confidence of youth to the quiet warmth of old age, with everything in between. A wedding in batik, a child running toward the school gate, and eventually, two grey-haired people laughing on a bench like they have nowhere else to be.

What made this campaign interesting —and honestly, what made it fun— was the constraint. We couldn't cast a different actor for each life chapter. The story had to belong to one person, which meant we had to build time itself into the frame. Makeup, styling, and careful lighting became our way of ageing him gracefully. By the time we reached the retirement scenes, the transformation was complete: silver hair, the kind of wrinkles that only come from a life well-smiled through, and a wife beside him who'd aged just as beautifully. The illusion held because we committed to it entirely.

The backgrounds were another story, literally. I've been deep into AI-generated environments lately, and this project gave me room to push that further than I had before. For each life phase, I designed a world that felt emotionally true to that moment: the cool geometry of a modern transit station for the ambitious young professional, the lush warmth of an outdoor setting for the retirement chapter. None of it existed before I drew it up. I designed everything ahead of the preproduction meeting, presented the full visual language to the client, made adjustments where the concept needed sharpening, and then worked backwards. Engineering the lighting on set so every photograph would land correctly against its intended background.

That part, the calibration between real light and imagined space, is where advertising photography lives or dies. Get it wrong and the composite feels like a collage. Get it right and the viewer never questions whether the world is real.

Akbar "Ibay" Abadallah from A+AN Digital Imaging Studio was the one who brought all the pieces into a single, breathing image. His retouching carries that particular Southeast Asian advertising signature. Dense, warm, precise, that I find myself drawn to more and more.

There's a richness to the regional visual language here that I think global campaigns often miss. This one didn't.

What stayed with me, after everything, was how much the project asked of everyone to believe in the story. A life is long. To compress it into a single key visual, and make it feel true rather than theatrical. That's the work.
